Can you use AI product photos on Etsy and Amazon?

Yes, if the photos show your real product accurately. Etsy lets you edit listing photos with AI, for example to change the background, but every listing must also include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, and you should mention AI edits in the description. Amazon cares about the result: a main image on pure white, product filling most of the frame, no text or props, and an accurate picture of what the buyer receives.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Platform rules change; check the official pages linked at the bottom before you publish.

A simple workflow that stays inside the rules

  1. Keep one real photoShoot one honest, unedited photo of your item in a real setting and keep it in the listing. On Etsy this is required.
  2. Make the main imageFor Amazon, Shopify or an Etsy first photo, put the same product on a clean background. The free white background tool keeps your exact photo; the AI editor re-renders light and shadow.
  3. Check and discloseCompare every AI image with the real product: shape, colour, label, print and size. On Etsy, add a line such as “Some photos edited with AI to change the background.”

What AI photos are good for

Good uses

Clean white backgrounds, consistent lighting across a shop, lifestyle and seasonal scenes around a real product, short listing videos made from your own photo.

Avoid

Changing the product’s shape, colour, materials or size; inventing features, labels or accessories that are not included; hiding wear or damage; showing a finished result you did not actually make.

Questions

Can I use AI product photos on Etsy?

Yes, with conditions. Etsy's help centre says your listing must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Other photos can be edited, including with AI, to adjust lighting or colour, crop or resize, or change backgrounds, but not to hide flaws or make the item look different from what buyers receive. If you use AI to edit listing photos, Etsy asks you to note it in the listing description.

Can I use an AI-edited image as my Amazon main image?

Amazon's main-image rules are about the result: a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the whole product filling most of the frame, no text, logos, watermarks or extra props, and an accurate picture of what the buyer receives. An AI-edited image of your real product that meets those rules is generally treated like any other edited photo. Images with photorealistic AI-generated people have a separate tagging rule; check Amazon's current help pages before uploading.

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and high, and the first photo at least 635 pixels to avoid showing lower in search. It recommends a horizontal (landscape) or square first photo, warns that files over 1MB may not finish uploading, and does not support transparent PNG files.

What size should an Amazon main image be?

Amazon's guidance is at least 1000 pixels on the longest side so shoppers can zoom, with 1600 pixels or more described as optimal, and the product filling about 85 to 100 percent of the frame on a pure white background.

Can I upload an AI product video to Etsy?

Etsy listing videos can be 3 to 15 seconds long and up to 100MB, and Etsy removes the sound on upload. Etsy's video help page does not mention AI, but the same rule applies as for photos: the video must show the item as buyers will receive it.
